Our Heritage

History of Deliblato Sands

The Deliblato Sands, once known as the "Banat Sahara," was historically a vast area of moving sand dunes. Strong winds carried the sand across fields and villages, threatening agriculture and settlements throughout the region.

In the late 18th century, forestry engineer Franz Bachofen studied the problem and proposed stabilizing the sand through vegetation. Beginning in 1818, large-scale afforestation efforts were launched, planting grasses and trees to anchor the shifting sands.

Overlanders, vanlifers, RV travelers, and campers are welcome for short or longer stays.

Located 5 km from Banatski Karlovac village for basic supplies. Our main house and community center are 3 km away.

Access: paved road with the final 300 m dirt road from the main road to the campsite. Accessible for regular vehicles in normal weather conditions.

The camp operates on a donation-based system (pay what you feel) supporting forest restoration and community projects in the Deliblato Sands.
